Stand with Jennie McCormack at Westlake Park Event July 18 -

STAND WITH JENNIE LINN McCORMACK,  ON JULY 18 2012, WESTLAKE PK

Jennie Linn McCormack is a single mother of 3 living in Pocatello, ID who found herself with an unwanted pregnancy in 2010.

Faced with the barriers of only two abortion clinics in Idaho both hours away that according to state law must make clients undergo an “informed consent” appointment at least 24 hours before a procedure, a “fetal pain” law with no scientific base that won’t allow abortions in Idaho past 19 weeks, and a budget of only 250$ per month in child support, Jennie terminated her pregnancy at home with an abortion pill purchased on the internet from an out of state doctor.

After confiding in a friend, this individual told someone who then called the police. Jennie was arrested and charged with a felony under a pre-Roe v. Wade law that states only a doctor can perform an abortion. The charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. As word of her arrest spread through her small and deeply conservative community, Jennie Linn now faces isolation, shaming, discrimination and lack of support

In a trial that started Monday, July 9, Jennie Linn is bravely challenging the constitutionality of this archaic law as well as the restrictive “fetal pain” law. This case could set precedent not just for Idaho but for the entire country. Jennie Linn McCormack’s experience represents the repercussions of 87% of counties in the US that lack abortion services, as well as the restrictive, anti-women laws that target all abortion access. It represents the new back alley abortion: abortion obtained illegally out of necessity, with legal and possible medical consequences

As some of the large pro-choice organizations remain disturbingly silent about Jennie’s case, Seattle Clinic Defense joins groups like Legal Voice, The Center for Reproductive Rights, and National Advocates for Pregnant Women to stand proudly with Jennie Linn.

Please join us for a speak-out and rally at Westlake Park on Wednesday, July 18 from 5:30 to 7 pm.

Westlake Park

400 Pine St, Seattle, Washington 98101

We will be providing an opportunity to offer donations, for people to write personal messages of support that we can send to Jennie Linn, and a chance to learn about and discuss how to challenge the slow chipping away of abortion access.

Jennie Linn was faced with a deeply personal choice that she is now taking public for the sake of us all. We won’t go back, and we won’t let her go through this alone.

Washington, DC – Founders of the We Are Woman March have secured a permit to rally on the west lawn of the United States Capitol on Saturday, August 18th. Marching for “rights affecting our bodies, our health, our families, our livelihood, and our future,” the rally is expected to draw women, men, and children from all over the United States.
Though the event was originally planned for September, construction on the National Mall foiled the group’s efforts to secure a permit for that month. Permit Team Leader Alaina LaTourette was able to work with the Capitol Police to file paperwork and obtain approval for the August 18th date. The team is tentatively aiming to organize a march to the Capitol that will take place prior to the rally. LaTourette says that marching is dependent on cooperation from the National Parks Service, the Capitol Police, and Metro DC.

Current Action Items - UniteWomen.Org

A few actions in development now:

  • We are in the process of developing a “Why Your Vote Matters” campaign highlighting how things might look different today if they voted in 2010, the importance of the selection of the SCOTUS, etc.
  • We are in discussions with other Organizations to jointly conduct Town Halls (nationally & in many States) prior to the election addressing that State’s specific legislation and legislation affecting all of us. We are in the early stages of these conversations and a lot of the ideas being discussed are forward thinking and include groups representing gay rights, immigrant women, domestic violence, minorities, pay equality, and reproductive rights (for a start.)
  • We’ve been compiling state and federal legislation. We are in the process of wording the legislation in very concise language & explaining how it affects women. We are also putting as much of that on a calendar to prioritize our efforts chronologically.
  • We are continuing our effort to highlight pro and anti-women’s legislation and where legislators stand in order to develop a scorecard. From that we will highlight which candidates we support.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE.

China to send first woman into space

China has sent their first astronaut into space! Many are saying “Isn’t it time” or tossing out sarcastic remarks, such as “What did she do wrong?” Unite recognizes the hard work all astronauts - no matter what their background or gender - must endure, and wishes her the best of luck!

Also, she states publicly “I believe in persevering. If you persevere, success lies ahead of you,” she said.

Isn’t this true of women’s rights! Let’s keep working to work for the rights we have, and to gain momentum in areas where improvement is needed.

Good luck to Liu Yang, China’s first female astronaut. You can read more here:

Updates

NOW Regional Conference
Our Olympia Community Organizer Liz Ellis, with the help of Cari Huston, represented UniteWomen WA at the NOW Regional Conference.  Liz said there was a lot of excitement and interest in what we are up to.

McKenna Lawsuit

A number of Unite women signed on as plaintiffs in the McKenna suit. An interview was provided to the Stranger that will explain why the lawsuit did not move forward:  http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2012/05/30/judge-its-not-illegal-for-rob-mckenna-to-lie-to-voters
-Special thanks to Nikoel Stevens, Beth Mountsier, and Taylor Malone for attending the in-person delivery of the motions to the McKenna offices.

Spokane Pride

Unite’s legislative team has been working hard to collect accurate information on Representative Cathy McMorris’ position on the Violence Against Women Act, which, combined with both the House and Senate versions of the Violence Against Women Act and, was handed out at OutSpokane Rainbow Festival a catchy little card along with bubbles for the kids with our logo on the bottle.  The card is non-partisan, encouraging people to volunteer at shelters, rather than voting for one candidate or the other. The card ties in with Pride as Unite contends that the House Version of VAWA does not protect LGBT, among others.

Special Thanks to!
-Special thanks to OccupySpokane who lent us their tent, Robin Yount & VisiPrinting in Tacoma for being so helpful in making the printing look great yet affordable, and the entire Spokane team (Taylor, Justin, Rebecca, Sophie, David, and more), and the Legislative Team (Mercedes, Linda, and Beth)!
-And extra special thanks to Sophie Hirschfeld for educating us on how we can support groups like the Sex Workers Advocacy Project and featuring UniteWomen on your radio show!  http://www.publicrealityradio.org/programs/tumblingbrainmatter

Olympia Pride

Liz Ellis helped represent UniteWomen while working with NOW at Capitol City Pride and made some great connections with other grass roots organizers including a group from Vancouver, WA that is spreading the word about approving Ref 74 in the southwest part of the state.

Paycheck Fairness Act - voted down again - NOW is time for a UNITED change!

While the Paycheck Fairness Act ended up losing along a party-line vote (all Dems voted for/all GOP voted against), hundreds of UniteWomen members nationwide made calls to their legislators to draw attention to this issue. This must be re-introduced (again and again) until it is passed!

Other States - what are your mothers, sisters, daughters, nieces, and grandmothers doing?

UniteWomenWA members have been helping with issues in other states including partnering with labor unions to call WI voters, promoting protests in MI against the ‘LetWomenDieAct’, and calling N.Dakota voters to try to stop personhood measures.  (This just in: Over 500 protesters showed up today in MI, many of them UniteWomen members and successfully stalled the vote on HBs 5711, 5712, and 5713-direct action works!)

Do not stop the support!

Keep up the support, we cannot do this alone! Let women’s rights groups know that you need them, volunteer at shelters, Planned Parenthood, NOW, NARAL, Unite or others. Send a card, donate a dollar, donate needed supplies, whatever you can.

Pass on the United News! Up next, future direction for United!
